Our Philosophy: Accessibility as Advocacy

Our digital spaces, including this website, are designed for maximal accessibility. What does this mean?

Supporting Assistive Technologies

We have deeply integrated assistive technologies (AT). AT acts as a mediator to enable the user to adjust the user experience according to their needs.

WCAG Conformance

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standards, with many features meeting the stricter AAA criteria.

WCAG 2.1 Level AA Conformance

WCAG provides a framework built on four core principles:

Accessibility Features

We have built the following features into our website to support diverse ways of accessing information:

Full Keyboard Navigation

Navigate the entire site using only a keyboard. Use Tab to move forward, Shift+Tab to move back, and Enter to activate links and buttons.

Text-to-Speech Widget

Our built-in page reader can read any section aloud. Control speed, pause, resume, and select specific sections to read.

Section Navigator

Quickly jump between page sections using our visual navigator or keyboard shortcuts (Alt+Up/Down). Ideal for long-form content.

Press Tab on any page to reveal a "Skip to main content" link, bypassing repetitive navigation for keyboard users.

High Contrast Focus States

All interactive elements show clear, high-contrast outlines when focused, making keyboard navigation visually clear.

Reduced Motion Support

If you have set "reduce motion" in your system preferences, our animations automatically minimize to prevent discomfort.

Descriptive Labels and ARIA

All form fields, buttons, and interactive elements have clear labels that screen readers can announce accurately.

Logical Heading Structure

Pages use proper heading hierarchy (H1, H2, H3) so screen reader users can navigate by headings and understand page structure.

Meaningful Link Text

Links describe their destination. Screen readers can make sense of links even when read out of context.

Accessible Forms

Form fields include visible labels, clear instructions, character limits announced to screen readers, and helpful error messages.

Touch-Friendly Targets

All buttons and interactive elements meet the 44 by 44 pixel minimum for touch accessibility, reducing mis-taps on mobile.

Sufficient Color Contrast

Text maintains at least 4.5:1 contrast ratio against backgrounds, meeting WCAG AA requirements for readability.

Accessibility Toolbar

Our website includes an accessibility toolbar (look for the Aa button in the bottom-left corner) that offers additional customization:

Your preferences are saved locally and persist across visits.

Neurodiversity-Affirming Design

Beyond technical compliance, we have made intentional design choices that reflect our understanding of neurodivergent and inclusive experiences.
